Mapping Marine Values and Human Use in the Indian Ocean Territories Marine Parks

This project, funded by Parks Australia under the Indian Ocean Territories Marine Parks Grants scheme, explores how people value and use the marine environments within and adjacent to the new marine parks at Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

In our reports we:

  • document human uses and values associated with marine environments within and adjacent to the Marine Parks;

  • identify key uses and user groups associated with different locations;

  • identify locations that have high importance for multiple uses/values;

  • explain the observed spatial patterns in human use of the marine environment;

  • link observed use patterns to new maps of shallow marine habitats; and

  • provide management recommendations.

We are grateful to all the members of the Christmas and Cocos communities who shared their knowledge and perspectives with us to make this project possible!
